TOEIC Vocabulary: British Accents
You will hear many different English accents in the TOEIC: British, Irish, Scottish, Australian, and various American accents. To become comfortable listening to non-American accents, go to these websites:
- BBC Learning English – A great website to listen to British and other non-American English accents. Grammar and vocabulary practice, too!
- Caroline Brown’s Listening Lessons – Over 80 Exercises for 20 different Short Talks, all done by a British speaker!
Note: the TOEIC mostly tests American idioms and vocabulary. Other than knowing that “pound” means “dollar”, “lift” means “elevator”, and “flat” means “apartment”, you don’t need to know much British vocabulary.
However, some English you may know (example: “vitamin”) are pronounced differently in British English!
